How to Prepare Your Backyard for a Swing Set or Playset in Maine

If you’re planning to install a swing set or backyard playset, preparing your space ahead of time makes the process smoother and ensures your children have a safe, enjoyable place to play. Families across Maine are investing in backyard playgrounds as a way to keep kids active, outdoors, and engaged close to home.

At Pine State Recreation, we help homeowners, schools, and communities throughout Maine design and install safe, durable play environments. Here are the most important things to consider before purchasing a playset.

Measure Your Backyard Space Carefully

Before choosing a swing set or playground structure, measure your available space. Every playset requires a safety zone around it to allow children to play safely.

A good general rule is to allow at least six feet of clearance around the structure. If your playset includes swings, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends a larger clearance—typically twice the height of the swing beam—to allow for proper swing movement.

Planning your space in advance helps you select the right size playset and avoids surprises during installation.

Remove Obstacles and Choose a Safe Location

The safest location for a backyard playset is an area free of hazards such as:

  • Asphalt or concrete surfaces

  • Large rocks or exposed roots

  • Tree branches overhead

  • Brick, stone, or hard landscaping edges

Installing playground equipment on appropriate safety surfacing greatly reduces the risk of injury and helps meet recommended safety guidelines.

Make Sure the Ground Is Level

Many backyards in Maine have gentle slopes or uneven terrain. Even when a yard appears level, there may be a noticeable incline once installation begins.

Checking grade and elevation ahead of time allows you to:

  • Determine whether leveling is needed

  • Choose a playset designed for uneven ground

  • Plan installation more efficiently

Some play systems can accommodate mild slopes, so discussing site conditions early helps ensure the best fit.

Choose the Right Playground Mulch or Safety Surfacing

Safety surfacing is an essential part of any backyard playground. Two common options include:

Engineered Wood Fiber (Wood Chips)

  • Lower initial cost

  • Needs periodic replenishment

  • Natural appearance

Rubber Mulch

  • Higher upfront investment

  • Long-lasting and consistent fall protection

  • Lower maintenance over time

Installing a drainable weed barrier beneath the mulch helps prevent weeds and keeps the play area cleaner. The structure should always be installed on solid ground first, with mulch added afterward.

Think About Sun Exposure

Playset orientation matters more than many families realize. Slides and plastic components can become warm in direct sunlight, especially during summer afternoons.

To improve comfort:

  • Position slides facing north or east when possible

  • Use natural shade from trees where available

  • Consider lighter-colored components in sunny locations

Proper placement helps keep equipment comfortable and safe during hot weather.

Decide Which Play Features Matter Most

Every family’s needs are different. Some children love climbing, while others prefer swinging or imaginative play.

Common backyard playset features include:

  • Belt swings and trapeze bars

  • Wave or tube slides

  • Climbing walls and ladders

  • Monkey bars

  • Clubhouses or towers

Seeing equipment in person or working with a playground specialist can help you design a system that fits both your yard and how your children play.
